The Cards: Ace-King
The Celebrity: Unless you have been living under a rock the past few years, you know who Anna Kournikova is. The Russian bombshell was a professional tennis player for a few years before trading up to the model/celebrity lifestyle full time. You can read more about her and/or see pictures at Wikipedia and at her webpage. Also, you can check out a video from her calendar shoot.
Today: Anna Kournikova isn't the most popular nickname for my least favorite hand. That honor belongs to Big Slick. However, when it is used, snide and sometimes funny comments follow. These are mainly along the lines of "looks great, but doesn't always play well" and "easy on the eyes but never wins."

Poker Hand Names #2: German Virgin
The Cards: Pocket Nines
The Story Behind the Hand: What does a virgin say when you are trying to get into her pants? "No. No." Now what does a virgin from Germany say? "Nein. Nein!" This would sound like "Nine. Nine." to us. Clever, huh?
Today: This is useful knowledge that could prevent a potentially "sticky" situation if you are ever in Germany and wondering what position the girl you just met wants when she keeps calling out "9 9".

Poker Hand Names #1: Dead Man's Hand
The Cards: Two Pair - Aces and Eights
The Legend: On August 2, 1876, Wild Bill Hickok, the famous gunman and gambler, sat down in a saloon in Deadwood for a game of five card draw. While he was playing, Jack McCall snuck up behind him and shot him in the back of the head. When Wild Bill's cards were investigated, it was revealed that he was holding two pair, black aces and black eights, in his dead hand. The fifth card in the hand is unknown and hotly debated. It may have been the jack of diamonds, five of diamonds, nine of diamonds, or queen of clubs. Or he may not have had a fifth card at all.
Today: It is widely considered that any two pair of aces and eights is a dead man's hand even if they aren't suited in black. Also, various references in pop culture have been made over the years. It has appeared in the movie Dick Tracy as well as in songs by Bob Dylan and Bob Seger. Finally, in 2005, Interpoker had a Halloween promotion where they awarded $50 to anyone who got the dead man's hand while playing on their site. Look for this promotion again next Halloween.
