Here is a very informative article by Phil Gordon addressing a situation similar to one I have found myself in a number of times. You are short stacked in a tournament and you are faced with a choice of either pushing all in with the cards you have or waiting a hand or two and then being all in at the big blind no matter what cards you have. Specifically the article looks at a 3 handed situation but this information can be used as a guideline for similar situations.
The quick rundown of cards to play include: any pocket pair, any ace or king, queen 5 offsuit or better, and jack 8 offsuit or better.
